In Friday night's game Joel Zumaya threw two pitches before being pulled.  No, he didn't walk the bases loaded and give up game tying runs with those two pitches; that would be impossible.  He found another way to get pulled: he hurt himself, at least enough to get pulled.

What happened is Joel Zumaya appeared to cut the top of his thumb on his throwing hand.  Having pitched in high school and in college, I have experienced the same type of "injury."  I've never had to leave a game because of this, but then again, I don't throw 100 MPH on a consistent basis.

Somehow when throwing a fastball, the index finger crosses over and slides down the top of the throwing thumb and, naturally, the nail cuts the skin.  When you are throwing 100 MPH, I imagine this cut can get pretty deep and painful.  I recommend Joel gets a manicure to take care of his sabertooth nails and prevent this injury in the future.
